CHOSEN SKETCH FROM TASK 2 - The Dance

Fig 1 shows a composition of a pair of lovers dancing in a courtyard in the
background with a water fountain and greenery. I want it to have a gentle
and relaxing feel, with a timeless aesthetic. The timeline in the
composition is around the medieval era

The principles shown in the image are, balanced as the water fountain and
people have the same visual weight, harmony, as it will be aesthetically
pleasing to the eye, and contrast due to the shadow making a contrast with
    the scenery and people.

  Progression of sketch:

      Fig 2, Progression sketch

I made the courtyard bigger for a spacious feel and sketched out the courtyard more to give a more proper layout and to give it the feeling of freedom and endlessness, which ties in with timeless.
    Fig 3, Progression Sketch

I then remade the arches as per my tutors advice to reduce the amount of
arches. This is also the beginning of the line art.

    Fig 4, Progression Sketch

I then made an opening between the main 2 arches to open up the space more
and so that the lovers dancing looks like they are gesturing towards the
fountain. I also replaced the concrete outside with grass to give a more
natural feel towards the composititon. This is the start of the colouring.

    Fig 4, Progression Sketch

After some thinking, I decided to add a sea and sky to the composition to
add more to the feeling of freedom and continuity.

      Fig 5, Progression Sketch

I then placed flowers on the grass and added trees for added nature.

        Fig 6, Progression Sketch

I then redid the trees as the first was not good, I also added an additional tree as the front looked empty.
Finally, I added the lighting and shadows to the composition to give it
      more dimension and depth.

      FINAL ARTWORK:

For the artwork titled, The Dance, I wanted to depict a pair of lovers dancing on hall while facing a courtyard. I wanted it to be a calm and peaceful composition, so I used elements that can portray the meaning.
I drew the lovers dancing, since dancing, especially the waltz, is seen as something intimate to do with someone you love, and shows a deep connection with one another. Also, as they are waltzing, one is guiding the other towards the fountain in the courtyard.
I wanted to give the composition a dream-and-reality feel, so I saturated the courtyard while keeping the hall dark to separate the dream from reality. The main focus of the courtyard, the fountain, symbolizes timeless and never-ending, it is also a means of relaxation and beauty.
There are also trees in the courtyard which have the symbolism of strength, calmness and growth. The courtyard is also covered in flowers. Which contains the meaning of emotion, joy and love. Looking into the background has an ocean and sky present. It gives a feeling of vastness and eternity.
With all of the elements combined, it paints a picture of 2 people who are deeply in love with each other, with one guiding the other, almost like a confession. to a dream-like paradise, where their lives are beautifully intertwined with each other in a timeless state.
PRINCIPLES:
For my composition, I used Contrast to make a difference between the courtyard and the hall with colour and saturation. I also used the Rule of Thirds for the characters and fountain placement for it to be more cohesive. Harmony is present too, as the elements have similar meanings and go together. Lastly, Balance is visible as the visual weight of the people can be seen.

        FEEDBACK:

      Week 6:

Put the recap of the brief, and change the word sketch to development. In
the sketch, my tutor said it should be fewer arches and more colour.

      Week 7:
My tutor suggested for my composition, to make the colour of the tiles a lighter colour, add flowers in the courtyard, darken the outline for the arches and finally, she suggested to add plants in the foreground, however, I decided not to as it went against my rationale of keeping the "dream" and "reality" separate.

      REFLECTION:

I had fun as well on this task, my only regret was the timeline being quite short, as this is my first time making a whole composition with this many elements and having to draw all of it from scratch. Despite all of that, it was a lot of fun, seeing my compositions as well as my friends come to life. I also learnt a lot of drawing techniques and styles along the way.
